Sports scientist makes the leap to broking

A biomechanist who helped Australia’s track and field team at the Sydney Olympics has transferred her problem-solving skills to mortgage broking with Loan Market.

Lisa Bridgett came to mortgage broking via an unconventional path. She commenced her career doing a Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Science (Hons 1A), then completed a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Biomechanics. Specifically, she worked closely with the Australian Track and Field Olympic team to find the added edge from a mechanical physics angle for its elite long-jump athletes. She toured with the team during their preparation for the Sydney 2000 Olympics, collecting data, analysing their technique and making recommendations to improve their performance.

“As a biomechanist working with athletes, you spend many hours collecting data on the field in all sorts of conditions. You then head to the lab and analyse every frame of their performance to find that component of an athlete that can help them break through their personal barrier,” said Dr Bridgett.

“In biomechanics, the solution is developed through scientific analysis and the clearer the data and process is, the easier it is to achieve the result.”

Dr Bridgett also lectured in the university setting during her career and managed large research

teams. But with a passion for property - combined with her formal business qualifications in project and business management and a great love for helping people and ‘playing’ with numbers - Dr Bridgett heeded the advice that helped Australia’s elite long-jumpers and made a leap of her own.

Dr Bridgett said there were many transferable skills that strengthened her offering as a mortgage broker.

“I’ve done a lot of lecturing at various Universities in Sydney and having this experience has been beneficial in the much-needed educational piece when I sit down with my clients,” she said.

“Further, as technology is central to biomechanics, operating in the digital space is

central to my business as a mortgage broker.

“I’ve a lot of high-net-worth clients and investors who demand logic and deep insights for their

strategies. Having the digital tools like Loan Market’s Online Fact Find allows you efficiency and accuracy in delivering the best customer service.”

“My clients work very long hours but can get information to me at all hours of the night in this online portal. And when I wake, I have fresh insights straight from my clients to help me, help them.”

As a biomechanist plays an integral role in the make-up of an athlete’s support team, so too does a broker for a home-buyer or investor, said Dr Bridgett.

“A good broker should sit work alongside a good conveyancer, buyers’ agent, accountant, and financial planner in helping a client develop a comprehensive financial strategy. Thankfully, I am surrounded by a great team of experts in these fields and together, we deliver a service that my clients benefit from and appreciate.’’

Loan Market NSW Director Michael Karpathakis said Dr Bridgett was a prime example of a professional who had made a successful transition to mortgage broking.

“Lisa’s successfully made the move from the world of science, building trust with some of Australia’s best athletes, to building valuable relationships with clients through her exceptional people and analytical skills,” he said.
