Rowville broker launches Starlight charity drive

Loan Market mortgage broker, Fiona McLean has launched a community initiative to raise money for the Starlight Children’s Foundation throughout September and October.

For every loan that she settles during this period, Fiona will donate $100 to Starlight. A committed supporter of the Foundation, Fiona says she knows all too well the good work that Starlight does.

“I have four beautiful children and two of them suffer from life-threatening illnesses. My ten year old son has been granted his wish from Starlight to be a dolphin trainer and my nine year old is regularly in hospital. His stays are made easier and his days a brighter because of the Starlight team,” she explains.

“They make him feel like he’s not in hospital.”

Fiona and her two kids featured on the NRL footy show as part of the launch of the programme’s Starlight Telethon. Fiona told her story and her two boys, Joel and Bailey, met their football idol, Billy Slater.

“I decided that if our family story could help raise awareness and money for Starlight then it’s worth sharing it. Filming the segment was great fun for the boys too, they got to spend half a day with Billy Slater and he was great with the kids,” Fiona said.

Fiona decided to join Loan Market as a mortgage broker to give her more flexibility to be there for her kids. She decided while the footy show as raising money for Starlight, she could too.

“Having sick kids can be really expensive and it’s hard for us as a family to donate a significant amount of money to Starlight, that’s why I decided to run an initiative through my business.

“Every loan that I settle in September and October will be another $100 donation to Starlight. And the best news is that working with me doesn’t cost my clients a cent, I get paid by the successful lender.”

Understanding that it might not be the right time for a lot of people to take out a loan, Fiona explains that there are other ways to get involved.

“Making a donation directly to Starlight - no matter how much - will make a difference. This is a foundation that relies on the generosity of Australians to keep going. I know first hand how much joy Starlight brings to the kids they work with and I hope I can contribute in some small way to other children and families who are going through tough times,” she said.
