I didn't have the 20% deposit at the time I purchased and had to pay around $10,000 in mortgage insurance. It was super annoying at the time, however, when I look back now, with a home that has more than doubled in value, it was a small price to pay in the bigger scheme of things and allowed me to buy a home that was suitable for a long time and build up the equity that now allows me to do bigger things.
